Are Asphalt Shingle Blisters a Problem?

by Dec 9, 2020

Most roofing problems need urgent attention to prevent them from worsening. For example, if your roof is showing signs of a leak, which is a major problem, you have to contact your local roof leak repair specialists as soon as possible. Delaying the repairs on a leaky roof can lead to bigger problems on your roof and other parts of your home. However, not all roofing problems require the same sense of urgency.

Blistering is a common issue faced by almost all types of asphalt shingle roofs. Whether or not blistering is serious, however, depends on the situation. Let our experts at John Henderson Construction, LLC explain what blistering is and how to fix this perennial roofing problem.

What Causes Blisters?

For asphalt shingles, roofing contractors often blame two things for blistering: too much moisture, and too little ventilation. Of the two, moisture is perhaps the most destructive. When trapped moisture in the shingles themselves evaporates, it expands and causes the shingle to blister and pop. Inadequate ventilation, on the other hand, indirectly causes blisters by keeping hot and humid air inside the attic.

Is Blistering a Problem?

Blisters are a problem depending on their severity. One or two shingles affected by blisters is no reason to panic, especially if they haven’t popped yet and they are not causing any loss of asphalt granules. However, when your roof looks like a patchwork of popped and unpopped blisters, it’s time to call in the professionals.

What Can You About Shingle Blisters?

Blistering itself does not necessarily lead to premature roof replacement. First, make sure that the blisters do not pop. This means, avoiding getting up on your roof and stepping on them. However, if the number of affected shingles are already too much, it’s best to contact your local roofers for a quick inspection and repair.
