10/27/21 – Bomb Cyclone Batters The Northeast And Leaves 600,000 Without Power

by Oct 22, 2021

In the run-up to Halloween, the Northeast coast was dealt a heavy blow in the form of a bomb cyclone. The storm was labeled a “bomb cyclone” due to the storm rapidly intensifying and experiencing plunging air pressure in 24 hours.

What started as a rainstorm blowing in from the northeast across New England quickly turned into a bomb cyclone as the air pressure dropped from 1,008 millibars to 980 millibars.

The Northeastern area was quickly placed on flood watch due to the hurricane-force winds and significant downpour. The severe storm left more than 600,000 residents without power, 90,000 of them in Rhode Island.

Several trees were knocked down, powerlines destroyed, and significant damage was caused across Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine.

Government officials were prepared for the storm’s onslaught as a state of emergency were declared in New York and New Jersey the Monday prior to the storm’s arrival.
