The 4 Foolproof Methods to Maintain Your Cedar Roof

by Jun 19, 2019

Everyone wants to do what they can to keep the components of their home intact and working for as long as possible. This goes the same for roofs, especially a cedar roof. In this post, John Henderson Construction, LLC, one of the top new roof installation contractors in the area, explains four methods to help you maintain your cedar roof and prolong its life span.

  1. Proactive Maintenance – Proactive maintenance should be the first on your list. While cedar is the best when it comes to natural resistance against rot and decay, it’s still wise to have a professional conduct maintenance on it every now and then. That way, if any problem begins to rear its head, the pros can nip it in the bud.

  1. Cleaning – Cleaning is another good way of maintaining your cedar roof. Since it’s made of wood, the growth of moss, algae, mildew and loosened wood fibers are all in the realm of possibility. You can easily remove this by using a power washer on your roof. You can also install untreated copper, zinc or galvanized flashing to prevent mold growth. Removing debris that clogs your gutters can also help.

  1. Periodic Inspections – After a particularly bad storm with high winds, you can check your roof for loose or damaged shingles. You don’t need to climb your roof, though; using a pair of binoculars on the ground can do the trick. John Henderson Construction, LLC, one of the leading residential and commercial roofing contractors, can inspect your roof for you safely and thoroughly – in person or using our special drone!

  1. Finishes – Wood shingles like cedar roofs need to breathe to remain in good condition for a long time. With that in mind, it’s best that you use a preservative finish to accomplish this, such as penetrating oil. Avoid waterproofing sealants that form a film around the wood as these can trap unseen moisture against your shingles and allow rot to set in.
