Preparing a home for new siding installation in Connecticut

Remove Shutters and Fixtures

Siding installation will mostly be done outdoors. Go around the house and remove components that might get in the way of installation, such as storm shutters and other removable fixtures. Downspout extensions may also need to be removed to keep installers from accidentally stepping on them. Shrubs may need to be tied back or covered by tarp. Pacing out your preparations by doing them days (or even weeks) ahead can make it less stressful, and would allow ample time for you to find out how to properly remove exterior components.

Have the Trees Trimmed

Siding, roofing, and gutter companies like us recommend having your trees in your yard trimmed if the branches appear to touch the roof or siding surface. Sharp branches may poke and scratch the siding surface, and may create holes that would let moisture in. These branches can also get in the way of the installers during installation time. If you—re not sure how to properly trim branches without harming the tree itself, you can hire a local arborist to do it for you.

Clean the Yard

Set aside furniture, lawn ornaments, and other items from your lawn, deck and patio. This will give installers more room to move, as well as prevent accidental property damage. Take care not to cause scratches on your deck when moving furniture. Also, store toys and other loose items in a container to prevent accidents.

Remove Hanging Decor

Installers will be hammering away at the walls during siding installation, which can knock framed pictures and other hanging decor from the wall. Remove them for the time being and store them somewhere safe. You may want to take this opportunity to vacuum wall and curtains, as dust will likely be knocked loose from these areas.
