5 Roofing Danger Signals You Should Not Ignore

by May 16, 2019

Every roof is subject to wear and tear at all times. Keeping an eye out for danger signals lets you address roofing problems before they develop into bigger ones, maybe even the kind that will require help from new roof installation contractors. Henderson Roofing shares the roofing danger signals you should keep an eye out for.

  1. A Leak on the Attic — Make it a point to inspect your attic after a storm or wind-driven rain hits your area. If you notice leaks in the attic, no matter how small, it means water has penetrated the underlayment and outer roofing. A small hole in the roof can turn into a bigger one with continued exposure to the elements.

  1. Blistering Paint — Blisters in the paint indicate the presence of excess moisture. The roof is important in controlling indoor moisture levels through proper ventilation. If blisters often appear—along with other signs such as condensation, water stains and peeling wallpaper—your roof may not be getting proper air circulation.

  1. Mold and Mildew Growth — Mold and mildew thrive in moist areas. If you are noticing mold and mildew growth in the attic and along the walls, they can indicate a leak or a ventilation problem. In severe cases, mold may spread out on the roofing surface and form dark algae-like stains. Have a residential roof services contractor inspect your roof as soon as possible.

  1. Siding Decay — Wood siding is particularly vulnerable to decay from moisture, which is not as obvious as stains or blisters. Inspect your siding by gently but firmly tapping it using a long-handled tool, such as a screwdriver. If pieces fall out, you will need new siding and may also need to have your roof inspected.

  1. Missing, Cracked or Curled Shingles — If asphalt shingles have started falling off or are starting to show signs of aging, they may already have reached the end of their service lives. Your roof will reach the point where maintenance and repair won’t be enough, making it the right time to have the roof replaced.
