On Friday, July 9th, Tropical Storm Elsa officially made its appearance in Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut. The tropical storm hit the East Coast with a voracious strength, delivering torrential rains, hail, and wind speeds of up to 50 mph.

The tropical storm dumped buckets of rain in cities across the East Coast, causing widespread flash flooding and road closures. Several residents in New York City took to social media to document the significant flooding occurring in the cities subway stations.
In New Jersey, hail the size of golfballs reportedly fell from the sky, causing some damage to roofing systems in the area. Scattered thunderstorms accompanied the large hailfall.
The tropical storm first made landfall on Wednesday in Florida. It is believed to have claimed the life of at least 1 Jacksonville resident when a tree fell due to the storm’s strength and crashed down on two vehicles.
Several tornadoes were also reported as a result of the storm in Northern Florida and Georgia. An EF-2 tornado in Kings Bay, Georgia, caused significant damage and injuries to a few residents in the area.
By the time Tropical Storm Elsa reached the East Coast, it had been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.
Before the storm reached the East Coast, businesses in Rhode Island prepped for the storm’s arrival. Several bars and restaurants closed for the days that the storm was predicted to hit. The Block Island Ferry changed the regular scheduling to allow people to make it home in time before the storm hit.
Emergency officials in Connecticut had to rescue several drivers who were left stranded in flooded roads. They warned residents of the possibility of flash and urban flooding in the area.
